Solving the puzzle of diabetes care

2021 marked the 100^th year since the discovery and subsequent commercial production of a partially purified preparation of bovine insulin. This historical turning point changed diabetes treatment forever. The past century of investigation into the pathophysiology of diabetes has led to extraordinary advances in our insights and treatment approaches, especially in the last two decades.

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) recently published a consensus report on the management of hyperglycaemia in Type 2 Diabetes. This consensus report reviewed our current insights into diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES), the encouragement of healthy behaviours, medications, devices, technologies, and organisation of care, the combination of which facilitates the most effective management of diabetes to reduce its morbidity and mortality.
