Weighty childhood concerns – the Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow of adult health risks

R92.00 incl VAT

Childhood marks the beginning of a lifelong negotiation between biology and environment, instinct and influence, potential and constraint. In this session focussing on human development, we will explore the subject of body size and its unfolding implications. Additionally, we examine more than statistics or clinical trajectories—we consider how time sculpts the body and how society responds to that transformation. In our present world where food is both nourishment and symbol, and movement both freedom and burden, the body becomes a site of biography as much as biology.

Behind every curve on a growth chart lies a story—not only of energy balance or hormonal signalling, but of cultural norms, family routines, sleep patterns, loneliness and access. Obesity in childhood is not merely a medical condition – it is an expression of how a society values, or fails to value, its young!

If we are to reduce the long shadows cast by early disadvantage, we must ultimately be willing to ask not just what works, but what matters.
