In medicine, we often stand at the threshold between what is and what might be. Diabetic retinopathy, once an inevitability in the story of long-standing diabetes, now represents something more complex – both a marker of vulnerability, and a testament to the possibility of prevention.
In preparation for, and during this live online session, we will recognize the role of artificial intelligence-guided technologies in extending our reach, and in closing gaps in the care for young people who might otherwise slip through the cracks. Additionally, we will learn that the biology of retinal damage is not static but profoundly dynamic in its course, thus inviting us to look beyond mere palliation and rather toward regenerative strategies.
The emergence of AI asks much of us as clinicians. Can we hold innovation and compassion in the same steady hands? Are we willing to trust new tools while not losing sight of the humanity behind each image, each pixel and each ‘patient’?
